History of St. George's Church Poynton
Church History
Originally, Poynton was part of the Parish of Prestbury: there was a chapel here by 1312 and the Abbot of Chester was supposed to provide a Chaplain.

The list of those who have been Ministers in Poynton is on a board at the back of the Church and stretches back to 1596. We have produced one bishop - Robert Parsons - vicar of Poynton 1916 - 1919 - later becoming Bishop of Hereford.

The Church used to stand near the former Poynton Hall, in the area of the Pol. The present building dates from 1859, being Consecrated by the Bishop of Chester on 1 February that year.

The steeple was added in 1884, when the ring of 6 bells was placed in the tower.

Poynton became a Parish, in it's own right, separated from Prestbury in 1871.

The Church, being built in the middle of the 19th Century reflects the architectural tastes of that period - which was to create a building in 13th Century Gothic style, including the long, narrow chancel with Communion table at the far East end.

In 1998 the interior was partly re-ordered, to make the entrance of the Church more spacious and to bring the focal point of worship, and the communion table, into a more central position in the Church.
